Over 100 years ago a local family business was established which constructed the last cargo carrying sailing vessels to be built in Sandwich, an enterprise in shipbuilding that was to last just eleven years. Amongst the yard’s output was a sailing barge that was to distinguish herself at Dunkirk, be the victim of an I.R.A. bombing, yet still survive afloat to the present day; a living tribute to the craftsmanship and expertise of the Wm. Felton shipyard.
Within this modest sized booklet Margaret Simmons, great-granddaughter of the founder of the business, tells the full and fascinating story of the tragic 19thC. origins and subsequent success of the firm that launched the last ‘big ships’ into the waters of the Kentish Stour.
‘Despite its small size, packed with illuminating detail of a small shipbuilding enterprise and its influence on the businesses and people of the area.’
